Raised on a ranch near Cisco, Texas, George was fortunate to earn an athletic scholarship (track & field) to the University of Wyoming where he earned a degree in business administration with a minor in education. In his sophomore year, he met Patricia Lee Lemon on a blind date to an ROTC ball.
Pat & George were married while still attend UW, and upon George’s graduation they moved to Newcastle, Wyoming where he started a new distributive education curriculum at Newcastle High School in 1967. During the following three summers George earned a master’s degree in education at Colorado State University.
While living in Newcastle, Pat gave birth to two sons (Michael & Matthew). In the summer of 1972, they all moved to Maui, Hawaii where George started a new management – marketing curriculum at Maui Community College.
In 1975, George began a career in real estate and property management and became a Certified Property Manager. He started off managing a new shopping center for Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. and then became operations manager for Wailea Resort and later the leasing manager for all of A&B’s commercial properties on Maui. Upon retiring from A&B, he started his own property management company, Mitcham Management, which managed a wide range of commercial and residential properties. He sold the company in 1996, and semi-retired doing consultant work on the side.
In 1999, the Mitchams moved to Tucson to retire. However, George didn’t remain retired long. He worked for Cadden Management, and then became the operations manager for the Saddlebrooke Homeowners Association. Finally, he retired for the third and hopefully final time in 2009.
George and Pat enjoy visiting with their grandchildren (5), and competing in Cowboy Action Shooting. George enjoys reading, cycling, shooting sports, traveling, drinking beer and taking naps whenever he feels like it.
